PRAXIS 16: This episode features BL Manjunath, founder of Bengaluru-based Manjunath & Co Structural Consultants. As one of the few structural designers in the country, Manjunath stresses on the role that co-creation and co-authorship play in his practice. Comprising of a team of engineers and architects alike, the practice intends to cultivate a culture of collaborative learning and collective ownership. The processes in the practice are led by rigorous observation, with design being the driver and structure being the facilitator to achieve a holistic vision. As part of a founding collective, Manjunath instituted Wadiyar Centre for Architecture, Mysuru where he believes his interaction with students encourages a reciprocal exchange of learning. Coming soon, the sixteenth episode in the PRAXIS series! Designed as a renovation project in 2021, the Kashid House is a small residence perched on a steep hill with panoramic views of the Kashid valley. The space uses a grey floor and white walls to create a seamless coming together of visual palettes. The industrial roof enables one large living space that overlooks the pool and the deck capturing the vistas beyond. One of our most satisfying projects, the Kashid House is a retreat for the client - a refuge from the busy city across the bay. More soon…. IN PROCESS: Schematic section of our Colvale House project along with a visual representation in 3D. Nestled on a sloping site overlooking the Chapora river and fields with lush vegetation all around. The form of this residence in Moira, Goa is developed to articulate the open space. In focus: SJK Architects, for the fifteenth episode of PRAXIS initiative. The fifteenth episode in the PRAXIS series, out soon! Massing Explorations : A volumetric study of building form is done for a residential development of two identical villa’s on a long-linear site. We test out building mass, voids, openings, building form and articulation in developing interesting volumes. THE JEWEL: Regarded by many as the pinnacle of the architecture of the Mughal Empire, the Taj Mahal rises to a height of 73 meters, as a monumental jewel placed in the heart of Agra. The concept of the paradise garden reaches a state of serenity in the design, cut axially by water courses almost six meters wide, much larger than the narrow rills observed in Humayuns Tomb. The char-bhag garden typology is followed here as well, with one strong difference. Instead of a structure being placed at the center of the garden – like Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra – the mausoleum is placed at the far end of the garden. The tomb emerges from the large white plinth at the northern end of the complex, opposite to the main entrance gateway – as though it is the climactic feature of the entire design.
