PRAXIS 21 | Hundredhands

An editorial project by Matter in partnership with Şişecam Flat Glass, PRAXIS investigates the work and positions of diverse contemporary architecture practices in India. This episode features a discussion with Sunitha Kondur and Bijoy Ramachandran from the Bengaluru-based practice, Hundredhands. Their work spans public and private typologies with an intent to navigate abstract as well as real world conditions. Reflecting on their journey from the years of study at MIT, collaborations within and outside India, family, peer groups in Bengaluru, the conversation delves into the grounding influences and ideologies that have shaped over twenty years of practice. At the core of the practice is, as they articulate, ‘how does one create places of intimacy, places for congregation, places for celebration’.

In the twentieth episode, Samira Rathod of Samira Rathod Design Atelier discusses the systems and ideologies of their Mumbai-based practice along with Jay Shah and a few of her colleagues. An editorial project by Matter in partnership with Şişecam Flat Glass, PRAXIS investigates the work and positions of diverse contemporary architecture practices in India. In this episode, Mausami and Uday Andhare – Principal Architects of Ahmedabad-based Indigo Architects, reflect on the varied roots that form the position of the practice today. Moulded by a meticulous process and inquiry, their approach is pluralistic and explorative. Themes surrounding appropriateness, materiality, endurance, and environmental concerns feature consistently across the studio’s work. They elaborate on the spirit of the practice, viewing it as an ecosystem that broadens beyond the studio — to sites, stakeholders, academia and society.

The Takshila Lecture on Architecture and Society is delivered by an eminent professional / academician that addresses the growing disparity between the practice and pedagogy of Architecture in India, and the realities of our social, cultural and economic contexts. The lecture and the following dialogue aim to challenge the status- quo with a conviction that an open and honest conversation on the state of practice will instigate positive change.
